FOUNDation
From trash to treasure

A project by Rikkert Paauw, Hein Lagerweij, Anna Brecht and Jet van Zwieten executed during the Public Design Festival in Milano.

A (construction) container used at building sites in the city finds itself being filled with apparently useless material, restmaterial. This container is the starting point of a transformation. First it will be filled with waste (construction) material. But since the container is not at a building site but in the street, the material needs to be collected in the neighborhood.

If you think of your own house, are you storing any usefull material without ever using it? Some old wood,  paint leftovers, broken furniture? Why do you keep those things? Are they part of a future plan, a precious memory, a dream?

The 2×5 project of  spatial designer Rikkert Paauw and graphic/editorial designer Jet van Zwieten (Utrecht, The Netherlands) is about giving a new story to those things. After collecting and mapping the found material, it all becomes part of a small house, that will be build during the Public Design Festival by Rikkert Paauw. The container will be the foundation for the new construction.
Jet van Zwieten and Anna Brecht will give shape to a public journal that tells the stories of the found material and the people behind it and inform about the bigger story, the house, in which they will all come together.

When the house is finished it could become a meeting place for (contributing) neighbors, visitors and passers-by and give people an intimate view into the neighborhood.

Rikkert Paauw (1982) is an independant designer, based in Utrecht, The Netherlands. His designs for interiors, décors, furniture and mobile (outdoor) objects arise from used and found material as well as natural materials. His studio Stortplaats van Dromen (Dump of dreams) stands for improving the (social) environment in a very practical way, showing the possibilities of (waste) materials and reaching easy ways to let big dreams come true with little.

Jet van Zwieten (1985) just graduated from The Design Academy Eindhoven (The Netherlands) and is working as a graphic and editorial designer. She uses her design and communication skills in order to improve social structures and the (urban) environment. Imaging and perception play an important role in her work as well as the interaction between different analogue and digital material.
